In recent blogs, we’ve bounced around from topic to topic quite a bit. At times we’ve written about eBike tours in Portland, at others what our customers say about the eBike Store (the original and premiere electric bike shop in Portland, in case you were wondering), and other eBikey topics.
Today we will remain eBikey, or electric bikey, depending on what your preferred nomenclature is. But, as we digress, we’d like to point out that The eBike Store has electric bikes for sale AND rent — so you should feel free to stop by our shop without feeling any sort of obligation to buy. Whether you are visiting Portland and are looking for an “A to B” for the weekend or you’d like to commute with your eBike (for a host of wonderful reasons), we can help!
However, in today’s blog, we’ll be highlighting a few of the best things to do in Portland. Whether you rent an eBike from us or not, we hope you find these suggestions helpful! Let’s dive in!
The Waterfront Bike Path
It’d be poor form if an electric bike shop wrote a blog about their hometown’s tourist attractions without leading off with the waterfront bike path. But there’s plenty of reasons to check out Portland’s waterfront whether you want to rent an eBike from us or not.
For one, it’s free, which is always a good thing. Going on the bike path on the west side of the river will take you by Tom McCall Waterfront Park. If you aren’t in much of a rush, there are plenty of opportunities to meander off the path. Plus there’s a pedestrian-only path, so you don’t have to worry about a tour of eBikers (or regular cyclists, to be fair) colliding with you and yours!
International Rose Test Garden
The International Rose Test Garden is also free, but that’s not even the best part about this Portland attraction. Naturally, it all depends on what time of year you visit Portland, but if you come to our beautiful city while the roses are in bloom, it’s an absolutely wonderful, sensuous experience you won’t want to miss out on.
However, we’d recommend avoiding peak hours if you are interested in maintaining a proper ratio of flowers to humans. Keep in mind that you can visit Peninsula Park if you are interested in getting a similar experience without so many other people in your vicinity.
Portland Saturday Market
From March through Christmas Eve, every Saturday more than 350 local vendors, food cart owners, jewelry makers, photographers, and artists of all kinds gather in Old Town to provide one of Portland’s most cherished perennial events.
To be clear, no smoke is being blown here — we are talking about the largest continually operating outdoor arts and crafts market in the United States! Experience all Portland’s artisan scene has to offer, including live music, handmade knick knacks, and a host of delicious foods hailing inspired by cuisines near and far.
Powell’s City of Books
When many people think of things to do in Portland, Powell’s city of Books is usually high up on the list. The iconic bookstore is filled with shelf after shelf of books old, new, dusty, worn, rare, out-of-print, interesting, and boring.
Yes, it’s true. Not all books are interesting. But even the most myopic among us can see just how great Powell’s is. Some people spend days getting lost in each wing of the monstrous book shop, while others find that fifteen minutes is enough to satiate themselves. Either way, we strongly recommend checking it out at least once!
Our final touristic recommendation for your trip to Portland is another free one — Forest Park. Not only is it gratis, but you could probably fit a few thousand Powell’s book stores into the park’s acreage. What’s amazing about Forest Park is that it is right in the middle of the city, which means that you can take a hike whenever you want. Of course, you might get lost in the middle of the huge park, in which case you could just call a cab to save you. If you end up going, make sure you bring along some water and either a map or your charged up smartphone!
